Document Type Definition (DTD)

DTDs are SGML and XML schema languages that are primarily used to set declarations that describe a
class or type of document within a markup syntax. DTDs can define constructs that are not always
required within a document structure but that may affect the interpretation of the document. DTDs are
written in a formal syntax that explains which elements and entities may appear where in the document,
and what the elements' contents and attributes may be. DTDs are native to both SGML and XML.
